ClimateWise commended in independent review
A group of international insurers that have pledged to work towards to reducing the risks of climate change has continued to push hard for improvements in 2009, despite the ongoing financial crisis.

The insurance sector needs to move on from merely measuring the carbon footprints of its businesses to reducing them despite the pressures of the financial crisis, global insurance group ClimateWise said.

This is the conclusion of the second independent review of the actions taken by the group to enact their own voluntary commitments on climate change.

The cost of insurance will soar across Britain unless urgent measures are taken to halt the rise in global temperatures, industry experts will warn this week.

The Association of British Insurers, whose members control about 15pc of the FTSE 100, will reveal the findings of its latest report into the subject. This will show that a four degree rise in global temperatures could result in the cost of extreme inland floods – those expected to hit the UK once every 100 years – rising by 30pc to £5.4bn.

ClimateWise, an insurance industry group whose members include Swiss Reinsurance Co., called on developed countries to reduce their carbon emissions by 40 percent in 2020 from 1990 levels to help avert global warming.
