Insurers in climate change pledge

14/09/2007  |  City AM

LFADING insurers hit by rising claims from extreme weather have signed up to a list of green principles that they say will push the industry to better manage the risks of climate Change.

ClimateWise is being led by the UK trade body the Association of British Insurers. The industry is among those at the forefront of climate change research as around one third of all overall claims are from weather related natural disasters. Insurers faced a bill of more than $83bn (£41bn) for damages from the hurricanes that battered America in 2005, and this year claims are again rising after the Kyrill storm in January, UK floods this summer and two category five hurricanes in the Caribbean.

The pledges — launched by Prince Charles in Westminster yesterday
Include the commitment to carry out more research on climate change, to develop improved risk analysis and to engage in public campaigns.
